Infelizmente, entre a data de saída da primeira edição e da segunda ocorreu o falecimento de um dos autores, o Professor Luís Campos, o principal mentor deste projecto. The fifth edition of Numerical Methods for Engineers continues its tradition of excellence. Instructors love this text because it is a comprehensive text that is easy to teach from. Students love it because it is written for them—with great pedagogy and clear explanations and examples throughout. The revision retains the successful pedagogy of the prior editions. Esta nova edição constitui uma actualização e modernização significativa da anterior, como o autor frisa no seu Prefácio. A tradução procurou não só seguir o texto mas também minimizar uma certa heterogeneidade de estilos da edição anterior, que se deveu à participação de muitos colaboradores - o que não aconteceu desta vez.
Introduzi agora dois conceitos que na anterior edição tinha contornado: os fasores e as ôndulas. Os fasores vêm substituir toda uma construção elaborada sobre amplitudes complexas; são utilizados normalmente em engenharia e não se justifica mais atrasar a sua introdução na obra. As ôndulas são introduzidas para traduzir wavelets, essencialmente no contexto dos princípios de Huygens e de Huygens-Fresnel, substituindo com vantagem construções baseadas em ondas secundárias, e ganhando perante traduções possíveis - tais como "ondículas" ou mesmo "ondeletas" - que não ultrapassaram a barreira dos meus pressupostos e preferências. …

This book presents the physics of incompressible flow for the benefit of students and others who need to understand fluid motion.
